Reform and Change in Social Studies: 1998 SSEC Annual Conference. Research Report.
Nelson, Murry R., Ed.; Monsen, Lars, Ed.; Nordkvelle, Yngve, Ed.
Over the past 10 years, there have been calls for and attempts at social studies reform in Norway and the United States. But all social sciences, it seems, are not equal. Some social sciences (history, geography, civics, economics) are more equal than others (sociology, anthropology, psychology). Within this charged atmosphere the Social Science Education Consortium held its annual conference in Norway in 1998, and 11 papers from that conference are presented in this collection. The papers are: "Using National Social Studies Standards in the Real World" (Gerald W. Marker); "Technology and Reform: A Retrospective View" (Richard A. Diem); "If the Internet Is the Answer, What Is the Question?" (Peter R. Senn); "Electronic Technology and the Future of Social Studies in Elementary and Secondary Schools" (James P. Shaver); "On the Half-Life of Curriculum Reform: Personal Reflections" (Nicholas Helburn); "The Difficulty in Change: The Tenacity of Teachers and Teacher Education--New York as a Case Study" (Linda Biemer); "On the Paradox of Evaluating Achievement in Social Studies" (Arja Virta); "History Education, Cultural Identity and Practice" (Mariane Hedegaard); "News Media Education in Democratic Societies: A Means to Reforming Social Studies?" (Mary A. Hepburn); "News Media Education in Democratic Societies: as a Means to Reforming Social Studies" (Jan Vincens Steen); and "Reform and Changes in Social Studies" (Erik Lund). (Most papers contain references.) (BT)
