Reflections From a Fresnel Lens
Keeports, David
Physics Education, v40 n1 p60-66 Jan 2005
Reflection of light by a convex Fresnel lens gives rise to two distinct images. A highly convex inverted real reflective image forms on the object side of the lens, while an upright virtual reflective image forms on the opposite side of the lens. I describe here a set of laser experiments performed upon a Fresnel lens. These experiments provide information about the paths followed by rays forming reflective images and additionally enable measurement of numerous properties of the lens. All of these experiments, which together illustrate a surprisingly large number of principles of introductory optics, can be readily performed by students in an introductory physics course.
