College Centers for Older Learners.
Smith, Judith L.
Across the nation, colleges are discovering a new group of students: retired learners. Special programs are emerging to meet the unique needs and interests of this mature population. This booklet describes these programs under the generic title, College Centers for Older Learners (CCOLs). CCOLs offer a stimulating college environment for older peer groups without the pressure associated with bureaucratic red tape, tests, and grades. This booklet is designed to raise the awareness of both older learners and college administrators about the opportunities that await a relatively untapped student body of "learned learners." It describes older learners and provides statistics about the geographic location of older persons, their interests and motivation, and information about meeting their needs. It also describes the various types of CCOLs, such as academic, practical, or a mixture of both, and student-run or run by the institution. Program formats are described, with examples given. Tips for launching a CCOL are included for those who may be interested in starting a center. A list of CCOLs by state is included. (KC)
