Kirby, Michael, Ed.
The Drama Review, v22 n4 Entire Issue Dec 1978
The articles in this publication trace the historical development of the theatre workshop, explain the relationship between the workshop and experimental theatre, and analyze the ways in which current drama workshops teach and develop the dramatic skills of the participants. The topics discussed include the special skills, production-oriented, and self-exploration workshops; a technique that trains actors in a neutral atmosphere and requires them to wear neutral masks; the Suzuki method, which is based on the acting techniques of Kabuki theatre; a technique that relates abstract and actual space to acting; experiments in discourse-making according to devices developed by Bertolt Brecht; a "Theatre of Roots" workshop led by Ryszard Cieslak; and public participatory events that involved the rituals of walking and flying. The drama "Rasputin," by Erwin Piscator, is discussed in two separate articles: one deals with the original production, the other with a technical recreation of the drama. The publication also includes reviews of six new books on the dramatic arts. (MAI)
