Acid Rain. Teacher's Guide. LHS GEMS.
Hocking, Colin; Barber, Jacqueline; Coonrod, Jan
This teacher's guide presents a unit on acid rain and introduces hands-on activities for sixth through eighth grade students. In each unit, students act as real scientists and gather evidence by using science process skills such as observing, measuring and recording data, classifying, role playing, problem solving, critical thinking, synthesizing information, brainstorming, and decision making. The units presented in this guide meet the National Science Education Standards as well as state frameworks and district guidelines. There are eight 45- to 60-minute sessions focusing on different concepts in the guide. Units include: (1) "Pick Your Brain about Acid Rain"; (2) "Introduction to Acidity and pH"; (3) "Startling Statements about Acid Rain"; (4) "Fake Lakes"; (5) "Welcome to Laketown!"; (6) "The Salamanders Have Their Say"; (7) "Town Meeting: Making Community Decisions"; and (8) "Everything You've Always Wanted To Know about Acid Rain."
