Games in Geography.
Walford, Rex
Six games designed for classroom use are described in this book: 1) Shopping Game; 2) Bus Service Game; 3) North Sea Gas Game; 4) Railway Pioneers Game; 5) Development Game; and 6) Export Drive Game. The description of each game comprises a separate chapter, and includes information about the general aims of the game, how the various game elements tie in with reality, equipment needed, and how to play. Some of the broad concerns with which the games deal are: 1) basic concepts and ideas within the framework of space; 2) an attempt to deal with important decision-making processes relevant to human geography; 3) factual material concerned with world geography; and, 4) structuring of geographical material into meaningful categories and classifications. The games display a wide range of complexity and can be played at varying levels by both elementary and secondary level students. Introductory chapters of the book provide some perspective through discussions of some present problems and new movements in the teaching of geography, and through an analysis of geographical gaming as a practical aspect of model theory. Later chapters describe two actual game operations, and provide a suggested sequence for developing one's own games/simulations. (Author/JLB)
