Don't Throw Away Your Radioactive Sources!
Tracy, Charles; Cunningham, Elizabeth
Education in Science, n255 p22 Feb 2014
This article reports on a plea directed to schools in England that changed status to an "academy" and thus lost their Local Authority Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) service. These schools have been encouraged to do all that they can to hang on to their sources (radioactive equipment used in classroom experiments to investigate radioactivity), why? In the late 1990s, the regulations about using and storing radioactive sources changed. It became a requirement for any employer (school) holding sources (above a certain level) to appoint an RPA with a qualification recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Given the likely costs to schools, CLEAPSS (a local government advisory service that works with schools regarding safety and science) set up a team of 16 qualified RPAs. Schools could access these RPAs through a network of Radiation Protection Officers (RPOs), who were based in Local Authorities (LAs). Recent changes in schools and LAs meant some LAs no longer have an RPO or they were using a private contractor as their RPA. This more expensive cost was forcing schools to get rid of their radioactive equipment. CLEAPSS came to the rescue, providing contacts so an academy, a free school, a college or an LA school that uses radioactive equipment for school experiments can locate service available in their location.
