As historians and publishers scrambled to revise American history textbooks in the wake of the 1960s, textbooks increasingly strove to include the experiences of African Americans and avoid dangerous racial stereotypes. After the Civil Rights movement and decades before scathing criticism of textbooks for their inability to address racism in American history from authors such as James Loewen, one textbook, John Wiltz's "The Search for Identity: Modern American History" (1973), provided an unprecedented historical narrative. "The Search for Identity" offered a narrative that reflected America's multiracial past and revealed what recent historians identified as "whiteness" and the social construction of race. The result was a progressive textbook that explored the nexus of racial identity, white privilege, and American history in a way that may prove invaluable for students in the twenty-first century.
