Teaching Race as a Social Construction: Two Interactive Class Exercises

Teaching the social construction of race remains one of the most challenging tasks for instructors, yet understanding this concept is integral to student success in race and other inequality-themed courses. Instructors have access to an array of readings to help students understand race as a social construction, but few known inclass activities to teach the concept. In this article, the authors propose two exercises, "What's My Race?" and "Black or White?," that are depersonalized to minimize student discomfort, but nevertheless connected to the real world. These exercises work in a variety of contexts with regard to racial diversity and class size. They mention that both exercises demonstrate the social construction of race by allowing students the opportunity to examine and critique the categories themselves. They find these exercises useful for race and inequality-themed courses, but they can also be used in introductory-level sociology courses. (Contains 2 figures and 4 footnotes.)
