Teen Dating Violence Prevention Program Assessment
Lucas, Quincy Arrianna Rose
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
The American Psychological Association (APA) has identified the prevention of and intervention in relationship violence as a top priority (APA, n.d.). According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's 2012 Teen Dating Violence Fact Sheet, dating violence is a serious problem in the United States. In accordance with Foshee et al. (1998): Given that partner violence is one of our significant public health problems and that it often begins during adolescence, youth violence prevention efforts should include activities for preventing this specific form of violence and be evaluated for effectiveness. What was examined within this executive position paper is how to best determine if the eight teen dating violence prevention programs discussed within this paper were effective and what was the best method of measurement to determine prevention program effectiveness. Through a survey instrument tool in addition to interviews conducted; the researcher collected data from teen dating violence prevention program leaders to review how a sample of community and school-based teen dating violence prevention programs are currently measuring their program effectiveness. In spite of the limitation of limited knowledge and access to all of the teen dating violence prevention programs in the country; that ultimately resulted in a small sample size and low response rate ; this study yielded three policy recommendations. As a result of this study, it was recommended that consideration be given to the development of a common element curriculum that includes elements that literature reveals are essential to an effective teen dating violence prevention program, in addition to consideration of developing a common assessment that can be used to measure how effective the curriculum is with both the curriculum and assessment field tested throughout the eight programs researched within this study.
