Geometry Embedded in North American Quilt Patterns
Wares, A.
International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, v37 n5 p608-613 Jul 2006
Quilts are an integral part of the North American culture. Most households in North America have quilts with intricate geometric patterns. These patterns symbolize different things to different groups of people in this part of the world. It is important for students to see how mathematics comes from what is done in day-to-day life, not from the pages of sterile texts. North American quilts provide a wonderful opportunity to do exactly that. The purpose of this paper is to introduce two high school level geometry activities in the context of quilt patterns. (Contains 4 figures.)
