Exploring the Language of Youth Purpose: References to Positive States and Coping Styles by Adolescents with Different Kinds of Purpose
Mariano, Jennifer Menon; Savage, Jessica
Journal of Research in Character Education, v7 n1 p1-24 2009
This study used an exploratory mixed methods design to address the questions: (1) "Is there a positive language of youth purpose, and if so, what is it like?" and (2) "Which kinds of purpose best predict reports of positive states and coping styles?" Qualitative coding identified references to positive states and coping strategies in 172 adolescents (Mean age = 16.7 years), while they were being interviewed about their purposes in life. Codes were then quantified and subjected to statistical analyses of group differences on, or correlation with 6 instruments measuring aspects of purpose. Adolescents referred to a variety of positive states and a subsample (n = 50) referenced using coping styles in the face of difficult challenges. Statistical analyses revealed significant differences in some positive state references between purpose groups on all measures, with the most marked findings related to statements of generosity, empathy, gratitude, and humor. Verbosity and social desirability did not comprehensively influence state and coping style reports, and purpose significantly predicted a number of positive states. Implications of the findings are discussed. (Contains 6 notes and 7 tables.)
