Never before has the demand for health care professionals been as great as it is now. But the supply of qualified domestic graduates is not expected to keep up with this demand, thus creating a shortage in most fields. Although the need in nursing is well documented, just as great a need exists in other health care fields: home health aides, pharmacy technicians, medical assistants, health information technologists, clinical laboratory technicians, dental hygienists, radiographers, physical therapist assistants, veterinary technologists, and health care workers who are multicredentialed. Advances in medical technology will continue to improve the survival rate of patients who have experienced severe trauma or life-threatening diseases. This increased survival rate, coupled with the escalating numbers of baby boomers demanding quality health care services, will call for increasing numbers of professionals educated in the historical health care disciplines and in new ones just across the horizon. So in addition to the traditional associate degree programs in nursing and allied health offered by community colleges, a need exists to create short-term postsecondary programs, one-year certificate programs, and postgraduate programs leading to advanced certifications. Changes in health care policy at the national level can have a great impact on this industry and may either increase or decrease the demand or supply in certain areas. This article reviews the trends in selective health care programs appropriate to the community college, assuming recent trends and policies remain in place.
