The Role of the Assessment Coordinator in a Division of Student Affairs
Livingston, Carolyn H.; Zerulik, Jonathan D.
New Directions for Student Services, n142 p15-24 Sum 2013
This article describes the emerging role of assessment coordinators in student affairs divisions. It highlights opportunities and challenges in that role along with key findings from assessment projects. Specifically, this article has several purposes. The first is to identify the role of the assessment coordinator and the opportunities the position creates. This includes creating and managing assessment teams, encouraging and stimulating assessment projects, ensuring that assessment is a divisional priority among senior leaders, providing educational opportunities for staff, and reviewing assessment reports and providing feedback. The second purpose of this article is to discuss the challenges encountered by assessment coordinators. One of the most difficult challenges of coordinating assessment in a student affairs division is managing people whose reporting line falls outside of the coordinator's direct purview. The third purpose of this article is to highlight examples of assessment projects. Throughout, the article presents some thoughts and suggestions about creating or enhancing an assessment coordinator position on university campuses.
