In Plain, Brown Wrapper. Teacher's Guide [and] Student Material.
Estes, Cynthia
This document provides teaching guidelines and student material for a unit intended for use in sixth grade consumer, home economics, or language arts programs. Time allotment is six hours of classroom time spread over a two to three week period. The objectives of this capsule are to help students understand the purpose of advertising, locate the information contained in ads, analyze ads for misleading information, and recognize the benefits of advertising to the consumer. Three sections contain activities which require the student to look at ads in order to learn what they are really saying, analyze ads for misleading statements, and learn about the good points of advertising. Eighteen learning activities include finding the cheaper of two advertised products, locating and drawing inferences from ads, writing singular nouns from plural noun forms, deciding whether or not an advertised product should be ordered, and constructing a display. Three supplementary activities include writing a paragraph about a law affecting commercial television advertising, ordering a product and comparing expectations with what was actually received, and doing research about the Comic Magazine Association of America. The teacher's guide provides advance preparation information, keys to activities and tests, a bibliography, and copies of all worksheets and assessments. (CK)
