Two social studies units, one on juvenile delinquency and one on crime and justice, are presented for the ninth grade level. The three-week juvenile delinquency unit focuses on special problems that minors face regarding the law. Students learn the difference between juvenile and adult courts and between status and delinquent offenses. In addition to textbook assignments, students view filmstrips, "You and the Law" and "Juvenile Problems;" role play a visit with the county attorney about family law; hear a resource person from the local child abuse group; and play a simulation game, "Kids in Crisis." In the seven-week crime and justice unit students examine and experience the problems of the criminal justice system. Prisons and the theory of punishment and rehabilitation are also examined. Simulations include a mock trial and a game which gives insight into the work and problems of law enforcement officers. Objectives; key concepts; a daily outline; study guides for textbooks, tests, and attitude surveys; and a bibliography of texts, games, audiovisual materials, and reference books are included for each unit.
