Sally L. Smith had a clear vision of how she thought speech and language services should be integrated into her school, The Lab School of Washington. It was Smith's idea that language therapists should work individually with students to help them make gains in their particular areas of need, as well as to work collaboratively with the teachers, artists, music teachers, drama teachers, social workers, occupational therapists, and other professionals who provide services to her children. This dual approach of individual pull-outs and integrated teaching was, and in many ways still is, a novel and unique aspect of how speech and language services are provided at the Lab School of Washington. It is a major reason why many of the Speech/Language Pathologists (SLPs) on staff at Lab have stayed on for as long as they have. The SLPs working in her school were entrusted with a valuable and important place among a team of professionals who were committed to providing whatever was needed by Smith's children. SLPs understood the need to summon up the best of their education and training in order to help find a way to get the kids to learn and to make it stick.
