Behavior and Development: Physical Development--"Riding Along" Outdoors!
Strickland, Eric
Early Childhood Today, v19 n7 p5-6 May 2005
Riding toys and push-pull toys are traditionally part of every early childhood program. Young children can develop a wide variety of skills and get numerous health benefits from riding toys if one is careful and thoughtful in setting up the riding-toy area. This article describes various types of riding toys and activity ideas to enhance children's physical development. For infants, deep-well wagons with lots of padding are recommended. Walk-behind toys with a low center of gravity are the perfect toys for the physical development of toddlers. For preschoolers, toys that can support cooperative dramatic play, such as two-seaters or toys with carts, or wagons children can use to give friends a ride can be added. Push scooters and stand-up riders help with developing kindergartners' coordination, leg and arm strength, and balance. Finally, motor-planning challenges for children with special needs who use wheelchairs or walkers can be enhanced by setting up slalom courses using cones or small boxes.
