This paper describes an elective course in twentieth century lesbian novels, designed for women, that explored the cultural dimensions of lesbianism. It traces the development of the course from the time of its proposal to the departmental curriculum committee to its conclusion at the end of the spring sememster, discusses the publicity and controversy connected with the course, and evaluates its shortcomings and success. The paper also includes copies of the original course proposal, the reading list for the course, a six-page bibliography of lesbian literature and books on related issues, and the evaluation of the course that was submitted to the departmental curriculum committee.
