Influence of Contextual Cues on the Efficacy of Desensitization and a Credible Placebo in Alleviating Public Speaking Anxiety
Slutsky, Jeffrey M.; Allen, George J.
Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 46, 1, 119-25, Feb 78
After participating in a public speaking situation that allowed collection of self-report, physiological, and behavioral manifestations of anxiety, 67 subjects were randomly assigned to either desensitization, "T scope" therapy, or no treatment. Desensitization reduced public speaking anxiety in both contexts, whereas the placebo was effective only in the therapeutic setting. (Author)
