Designed to offer guidelines, ideas and help to those who provide library service to young adults, this manual includes information about the provision of young adult (YA) services in six sections. The first section, which addresses planning and administration, includes a definition of a young adult and a checklist for determining community needs for YA services. It also covers how to do a school survey of YA usage, goals and policies for YA service, staff, training, youth advisory boards, budget and funding, library space, gaining administrative support, evaluation of services, and long-range planning. Focusing on materials, the second section covers selection, records and cassettes, posters, weeding the collection, patron complaints and censorship, and suggested titles for a YA collection. The third section covers reference and homework help, including standards and guidelines for reference service, reference needs of YAs, reference sources for YAs, library instruction, information and referral, and special problems and helps. Outreach and community contacts are covered in the fourth section, which includes surveying community resources and agencies, working with the schools, and services for the disabled. Programming is covered in the fifth section, which includes planning programs, publicity, booktalking, teen volunteers in the library, and program ideas, and the final section briefly describes and lists YA networks in Florida. Each of the first five sections is followed by a bibliography of related materials, and various sample forms are provided. (KM)
