This KIDS COUNT sixth annual report examines statewide trends in the well-being of Washington's children. The statistical portrait is based on five general areas of children's well-being: family and community, economic well-being, health, education, and safety and security. The 20 key indicators of child well-being are: (1) births to unmarried mothers; (2) teen birth rate; (3) teen pregnancy rate; (4) children in out-of-home care; (5) average wages; (6) per capita income; (7) jobs in low- and high-wage sectors; (8) child poverty; (9) infant mortality rate; (10) low birthweight; (11) immunization; (12) suicides; (13) public school enrollment; (14) eighth graders' attitudes toward grades; (15) fourth graders not meeting state testing standards; (16) child abuse referrals; (17) injury mortality; (18) firearm deaths; (19) juvenile arrests; and (20) children in juvenile rehabilitation facilities. The report shows improvement in teen birth and pregnancy rates, rate of divorces involving children, average wages and per capita income, percent of working families with children in poverty, infant mortality rate, immunization rates, mortality from medical conditions or suicide, percent of children without health insurance, rate of prenatal care, fourth graders' reading and math scores, child abuse referrals, firearms or homicide mortality rate, juvenile arrests, and mortality from unintentional injuries (birth to 14 years). However, worsening rates are evident in births to unmarried mothers, percent of jobs that are high-wage, number of poor children, low birthweight rate, eighth graders' reading scores, mortality from unintentional injuries (15 to 19 years), domestic violence arrests, and children in juvenile rehabilitation facilities.
