Counseling Psychology Doctoral Students' Training Experiences in Primary Care Psychology

This qualitative study focused on counseling psychology doctoral students' perspectives regarding their practicum training experience in primary care psychology. The four participants included three females and one male. Semi-structured individual and focus group interviews were used to explore participants' experiences. The participants described a collaborative care process that included the following themes: Mental Health Culture, Primary Care Context, Challenging Entry, Adapting to the Primary Care Context, Managing Complex Cases, and Results of the Collaborative Process. Overall, participants reported increased self-efficacy with collaborative health care processes in the primary care setting, increased awareness of minority patients' health care needs, and expanded understanding of primary care psychology as a potential area of practice.
