Test Review: D. Wechsler "Wechsler Individual Achievement Test" (3rd ed.). San Antonio, Texas--Pearson, 2009
Vaughan-Jensen, Jessica; Adame, Cindy; McLean, Lauren; Gamez, Brenda
Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, v29 n3 p286-291 Jun 2011
This article reviews "Wechsler Individual Achievement Test-Third Edition" (WIAT-III), which is designed to assess students' skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and mathematics. The test can identify an individual's strengths and weaknesses, assist professionals who are determining whether a student is eligible for special educational services or has a learning disability, aid in the educational placement of students, and help with creating instructional objectives or interventions. The WIAT-III is designed to correspond well with the response to intervention (RTI) model, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), individualized education plans (IEP), and other Wechsler instruments. Pearson published the WIAT-III in 2009. The "Wechsler Individual Achievement Test-Second Edition" (WIAT-II) was published by Pearson in 2005. To be qualified to administer, score, and interpret the test, a professional should have experience with psychological or educational testing, administering assessments, and administering assessments to individuals similar to those in the normative sample. Someone with no formal training in these areas may administer and score the tests under supervision. One new aspect of the WIAT-III is how the norms and scores are divided into three sections per year, which is one reason it corresponds well with RTI. (Contains 1 table.)
