Managing Community Projects for Change. NIACE Lifelines in Adult Learning.

This document presents practical advice to help managers of adult learning projects in communities across the United Kingdom manage their community projects for change. The following topics are discussed in sections 1-12: (1) the benefits of adult learning projects; (2) characteristics of adult learning projects and quality assurance mechanisms; (3) the importance of project management; (4) project processes; (5) key project roles and responsibilities; (6) project design and work plans; (7) partnership planning; (8) delivering the project; (9) monitoring, review, and evaluation; (10) celebration; (11) exit planning; and (12) conclusions and dissemination. Section 13 lists good practices, challenges, and troubleshooting. The following are among the good practices presented: (1) reflect on likely participants' needs, the organizational context, and wider community context; (2) base planning on project aims and objectives; (3) maintain a clear focus on planned project outcomes and opportunities to identify unanticipated outcomes; (4) differentiate between people who will be active partners and those who will be allies; (5) form management and/or steering groups to support and assist in optimizing project outcomes; and (6) engage staff who are aware of project parameters and aims of their own roles. A glossary and lists of five references and four useful contacts and networks are included. (MN)
