This article investigates to what extent students' experiences at a small liberal arts college reflect the institutional commitment to progressive thinking and practice. Through in-depth interviews across two studies carried out in 2012 and 2014, the authors found students reported that they felt institutional-level multicultural programming can promote shallow commitments to progressivism that silence student voices, creating a context in which daily emotional concerns are overlooked. Students referred to this silencing as "politically correct" talk. In this article, the authors explore student understandings of the politically correct and offer solutions for creating a more open and welcoming campus environment.
