The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the specific factors associated with inquiry skills as a component of success with college level coursework. A hermeneutic phenomenological study was conducted to gain an understanding based on interview responses to questions about learning experiences as perceived and reported by first-year community college students. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes. Findings revealed various teaching and learning factors associated with the acquisition, development, and utilization of inquiry skills. Key findings include concepts related to student needs, ability, and opportunity for skills development, such as the perceived barriers that inhibit the acquisition, development, and application of inquiry skills.
