Preservice Teachers' Perceptions of Quality in Online Education Courses: A Mixed Methods Examination

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Stephen F. Austin State University
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine preservice teacher education candidates' perceptions of quality in online education courses within a regional comprehensive university located in Texas. The research questions also addressed students' perceived efficacy in their level of preparedness to: engage in field experiences; incorporate technology into classroom teaching; conduct effective classroom management in diverse student populations; and the ability to obtain stable employment after taking online courses. The survey instrument, developed by Wuensch, Aziz, Ozan, Kishore and Tabrizi (2008), was modified for this study by adding four open-ended questions to assess student perceptions of online teacher education courses. The data was analyzed using a concurrent embedded mixed method design (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2010). In the quantitative analysis, no significant differences existed in any of the eleven factors compared in preservice teacher perceptions of quality of face-to-face and online courses. Differences in the Organization of Course Materials (p = 0.019) and the Accurate Evaluation of Learning (p = 0.005) were not significant after adjusting for Type I errors. Using selective coding in the qualitative analysis, the narrative depicted both positive and negative perceptions of quality in online education.
