Natural History Education for Students Heading into the Century of Biology
McGlynn, Terrance P.
American Biology Teacher, v70 n2 p109-111 Feb 2008
Undergraduate biology students receive little training in natural history or in organismal biology. Natural history allows students to visualize mechanisms of evolution and identify common themes in the structure and function of organisms. By emphasizing natural history in all aspects of biology instruction, we might become closer to achieving the pedagogical goals of conceptual unification and successful application of major concepts and theories. Suggestions for introducing or enhancing natural history education in undergraduate biology curricula are provided.
