The interactive processes of university engineering lectures are analyzed from five points of view. Although the research is applicable to the study of lecturing in general, it is intended to have specific application to programs for students for whom English is a second language. A discourse analysis is based on models by Sinclair/Coulthard and Cook, which demonstrate the discursive nature and coherent features of lectures. An approach to textual criticism emphasizes cohesion, or the linking of elements within the test. A table of conjunctive relations is included. Kinesics is discussed in terms of role expectations and the need to coordinate the lecturing process with the environment in which the lecture is delivered. A script marked with the lecturer's gestures is included. Discourse analysis is coordinated with textual analysis to arrive at the specified structure of the lecture transaction. Finally, listening skills are examined in order to arrive at the role of speech perception in determining the communicative efficiency of lectures. Published listening comprehension materials are briefly reviewed. The document concludes with a discussion of note-taking, which summarizes the implications of this research for evaluating teaching methods and materials. (JB)
