Student Study Team Meetings are a function of general education and are conducted to meet the needs of struggling students. A great deal of time, effort, and fiscal resources are dedicated to the Student Study Team process by highly qualified school personnel. The intention of the Student Study Team process is to implement appropriate interventions and services to support the academic achievement of struggling students. In collaboration with parents, student interventions and recommended school-based services resulting from the Student Study Team process are intended to facilitate an increase in student achievement. This mixed methods study examined the effectiveness of the Student Study Team process based on academic achievement of significant subgroups of students and interviews with parents and teachers. The results of this study indicate that, while academic gains were made for students participating in the SST process, non-SST students made gains as well. The qualitative data yielded nine components that affect the SST process. The findings in this study indicates that the SST process does help the lowest-performing students improve academically, but the effectiveness of the process depends on close communication and collaboration among all involved parties.
