Temple University began use of the Ohio College Library Center (OCLC) system in January 1972. Implementation involved the development of detailed processing operation procedures. A comparison of manual and automated procedures at Temple illustrated the difficulties of changing from one system to the other and of the automated system itself. Statistical reports of the program up to Spring 1975 showed the need to expand facilities with more computer terminals. Manual searching of proof slip files was shown to be faster than computer searching, but OCLC cataloging had a clear advantage over manual operations in all tasks except the preparation of instructions in original cataloging. Problems perceived in the OCLC system included the difficulty of projecting needed capacity and probable costs of the system and the need for specifying an appropriate governing structure to facilitate long-range planning.
