This book chronicles and analyzes the efforts of big business to relieve urban problems. It is divided into three parts. Chapters 1 through 6 report on a nationwide study of corporate programs conducted from June to November 1969 and from April to July 1970. A total of 247 companies were surveyed. Top executives of 186 of these companies were interviewed in person. Information was obtained in correspondence and questionnaires from the remaining 61. The most popular types of urban affairs programs were examined in detail. Chapter 7 provides a case study of a subsidiary created by one large company to provide jobs and training for people heretofore considered unemployable. Chapter 8 offers conclusions based on the nationwide survey. These conclusions include: (1) Jobs for the disadvantaged have turned out to be at least as insecure as other jobs in industry, especially during a business recession; (2) Industry has paid little attention to job creation; (3) Personnel managers continue to have a narrow understanding of the meaning of manpower development; (4) Special recruitment and training programs for the disadvantaged have aroused resentment among some blue and white collar workers.
