Technology and the Individual. Harvard University Program on Technology and Society.
Traviss, Irene
Reports of concern for the effect of technology on the individual are represented in this review publication by abstracts and by subject summaries. Areas of discussion are the relationships of technology, culture, social structure, and the individual to each other. Change in work and leisure patterns, obsolescence in parenthood and citizenship, loss in individual freedom and privacy, and the influence of technology on values are discussed. Other effects considered are those on the psyche of modern man and on his social integration. Some solutions to the problems are proposed: a "revolution of hope," the development of a "counter culture," a change of moral allegiance, and the emergence of a new type of man who is characterized by the absence of any stable identity.
