Visual Communication: Integrating Visual Instruction into Business Communication Courses
Baker, William H.
Business Communication Quarterly, v69 n4 p403-407 2006
Business communication courses are ideal for teaching visual communication principles and techniques. Many assignments lend themselves to graphic enrichment, such as flyers, handouts, slide shows, Web sites, and newsletters. Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft PowerPoint are excellent tools for these assignments, with Publisher being best for flyers, handouts, and newsletters and PowerPoint being excellent for slide shows and Web site prototypes. Depending on course prerequisites, students may or may not have learned these software packages. Two or three in-class demonstrations by the instructor, augmented by condensed handouts with step-by-step instructions, are adequate for quick learning. In addition to learning the mechanics of software packages, students must develop the art of visual design. Design seeks to create a harmonious and effective mix of text, graphics, and space; and students should understand the following design and color information to serve as a foundation for creating their documents.
