Eventos de Marzo (March Events).
Toro, Leonor
Designed for teachers, this booklet, written in Spanish, contains information on seven March events: La Ley Jones; Pachin Marin; San Patricio; Primavera; Luis Pales Matos; La Masacre de Ponce; and La Esclavitud. The first section provides an overview of the Ley Jones, which introduced the bill of rights and made American citizenship obligatory for Puerto Ricans. Biographical sketches of Pachin Marin and Luis Pales Matos are followed by two poems by each poet. A brief biographical sketch of San Patricio, Ireland's patron, precedes a discussion of St. Patrick's Day, a myth of spring, and three poems about spring. The 1937 Masacre de Ponce, where 21 nationalists were killed and about 200 more were wounded, is recounted. The section on esclavitud includes brief discussions of the beginning of slavery, present-day enslavement of migrant workers, the abolishment of slavery, ways a slave could obtain his freedom, and the political and abolitionary struggles; a brief adaptation of the legend of Carabali, a rebellious slave; two poems; and brief biographical sketches of four Puerto Rican abolitionists (Francisco Mariano Quinones, Jose Julian Acosta, Segundo Ruis Belvis, and Ramon Emeterio Betances). Discussion questions, multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank exercises, scrambled word and vocabulary development activities are included. (NQA)
