Multicultural Service Learning: Educating Teachers in Diverse Communities.
Boyle-Baise, Marilynne
This book explains the complex interplay of service learning, multicultural education, and teacher preparation. It shows how the author collaborated with community partners and preservice teachers to jointly construct the service learning supplement to a multicultural education course, from the bottom up. The seven chapters are: (1) "A Sense of Journey: Toward Multicultural Service Learning" (cornerstones for and a vision of shared control); (2) "Making Distinctions: Charity, Civic Education, or Community Building" (multicultural service learning, making distinctions, and mismatch with multicultural service learning); (3) "Profiles: Four Views of Multicultural Service Learning" (prior studies, theorizing, investigations, profiles, making meaning, and ideal to real multicultural service learning); (4) "What Really Happens? A Look Inside Multicultural Service Learning" (with James Kilbane); (5) "The Spirit of Shared Control" (with Joni Clark, Bart Epler, William McCoy, Gwen Paulk, Nancy Slough, and Chris Truelock); (6) "The Exercise of Shared Control" (e.g., from perfect strangers to educational partners and community building); and (7) "Lessons Learned, Learning Lessons" (preservice teachers and community partners). Three appendixes contain case study methodology, questions guiding research forums, and evaluation criteria. (Contains 95 references.) (SM)
