The Competencies of Pre-Service Egyptian Biology Teachers in Identifying and Correcting Misconceptions about Photosynthesis in a Written Answer: An Evaluative and Correlational Study.
Zeitoun, Hassan H.
The purpose of this study was mainly to: (1) assess the competencies of pre-service biology teachers in identifying and correcting student misconceptions about photosynthesis; (2) search for relationships which might exist between each competency and a set of four independent variables, namely, background knowledge about photosynthesis, field-independent/field-dependent cognitive style, previous teaching practice of photosynthesis, and previous experience of scoring students' written assignments or tests; and (3) select the best predictors of each competency from this set of independent variables. The subjects selected for the study consisted of 200 prospective teachers enrolled in two colleges of education in Egypt. An instrument was developed by the investigator to measure the competencies of identifying and correcting misconceptions about photosynthesis. In general, the findings of this study imply that teacher training institutions should develop training programs that increase pre-service teachers' competencies in diagnosing and correcting students' misconceptions.
