Celebrate Leadership: Lessons for Middle School Students
Meyer, Maggie; Glock, Jenna
Rowman & Littlefield Education
Enriching, engaging, rigorous, meaningful--these are the learning opportunities that are interwoven in this book. In classrooms at various times, teachers find themselves wondering if students are grasping the content. Do they really understand? In this publication, the authors use the ideas of Howard Gardner as a guide in designing curriculum and assessments that will engage learners. Constructing learning experiences that are based on the multiple intelligences and the standards provides all students with the opportunity to be successful. When it comes to assessment of that learning, educators can use the same concept in designing authentic situations. The authors call these assessments celebrations of learning. To demonstrate understanding, learners need to have options so they can show evidence of their learning through the intelligence of their choice. To be a useful assessment, that learning should be applied in a setting that demonstrates understanding. This book has step-by-step procedures, planning sheets for teachers, and all the necessary reproducibles that students need. Following an introduction, the following ten lessons that provide a leadership overview are presented: (1) Getting Started; (2) Goal Setting; (3) Notable Research; (4) Life Rules; (5) Getting Ready; (6) Preparing for an Audience; (7) Putting It All Together; (8) We Are All in This Together; (9) Practice Makes Perfect; and (10) Reflections and Feedback. Appendixes include: (1) Flexible Timeline; (2) Learning Strategies; (3) Academic Standards; and (4) Selected Resources. [The foreword for this book was written by Tom Hoerr.]
