Report Writing: Guidelines for Information Workers.
Booth, Pat F.
This publication is one in a series of booklets designed to provide basic, practical guidance to information workers and students. It is intended to assist information workers (i.e., librarians, information scientists, archivists, indexers, bibliographers, database managers, information officers--and many other titles by which these workers are known) and those training to be information workers, who are required to write reports on such topics as student projects, research, professional or personal development, financial matters, system evaluations, departmental activities, meetings, and personnel. Guidelines for the production of reports in a variety of information-oriented environments are suggested; in most cases the principles are the same no matter what the context. Background and suggestions are set out within a perspective which looks first at the report as a form of written communication, then at the identification of purpose, topic, and message. Structure and content are then examined, together with the selection of appropriate style, language, and tone. Methods and problems of copy preparation and reproduction are reviewed and the special characteristics of reports for particular purposes are highlighted. The concluding chapter deals with the distribution of the finished report. A list of references is included and an index to the complete text is provided. (THC)
