Delivery of Workplace Know-How Skills to Secondary Education Students in Kalamazoo County. An Inventory.
Frybarger, Malinda J.
A study examined the delivery of workplace know-how skills training to secondary-level students in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. A total of 16 teachers, administrators, and counselors from the county's schools were interviewed regarding existing mechanisms for delivering training in 23 workplace know-how skills that a group of local employers had previously identified as critical to productivity and success in the workplace. Basic academic skills and task achievement competencies were integral parts of each school curriculum studied. Personal characteristics were being taught primarily through modeling and one-on-one interaction with students. Initially, most respondents indicated that behaviors with respect to organizations and interpersonal skills were not being directly addressed; however, closer questioning revealed that such skills are being addressed in relation to the education environment. The biggest identified barrier to delivery of workplace know-how skills training was said to be public perception that teaching and learning are not conducive to integrated, hands-on approaches to education and fear that movement toward practical applications will result in a "loss of basics." There is a need for a "teaching work force" and educators with "real-life" experience to model to students. (Appended are the following: interviewer protocol procedure for identifying interviewees; survey instrument; lists of Education for Employment Assessment Workgroup and Education for Employment Outcomes Task Force members and study participants; and glossary.)
