Supporting Self-Improvement in Teaching, Literacy, Language and Numeracy. Tools for Staff Development. Module 1: Challenge and Inspiration
Basic Skills Agency
The first in a series of five, module 1 provides everything one will need to run sharply focused, practical staff development training sessions for adult and Post 16 literacy, language and numeracy teachers. Each module addresses aspects of teaching and learning commonly identified as areas in need of improvement and can be used individually or as a full series, providing a comprehensive ready-made resource for continuous professional development. Module 1 highlights the importance of challenge and inspiration in successful lessons (Unit 1) and differentiation for effective learning (Unit 2). The materials are grounded in research and theory but provide very practical experience and activities that can be applied immediately in the classroom in a wide range of adult and post 16 contexts and settings. The units are broken down into bite-sized sections to allow for flexible delivery. Unit 1, Planning and delivering lessons that challenge and inspire learners, contains the following sections: (1) Challenge and inspiration; (2) Identifying common needs; (3) Starting to plan lessons and write learning objectives; (4) Introducing learning styles; and (5) Teacher expectation. Unit 2, Differentiation: meeting the needs of all learners, contains the following sections: (1) What is differentiation?; (2) The challenge and benefits of differentiation; and (3) Implications for lesson planning. Everything one needs to run the training easily is included: trainer notes; activity sheets; handouts; presentations in PowerPoint format (on CD-ROM); contextualised learner profiles and ILPs (on CD-ROM) for use in training activities. The resource also includes teaching and learning observation checklists, and lesson planning prompts to help participants put into practice what they have learned. Used in conjunction with the audit and materials in with Tools for managers, one will be able to select and deliver the most appropriate module in the series of Tools for staff development to address one's organisation's specific needs in improving teaching and learning in literacy, language and numeracy, resulting in greater learner satisfaction and improved achievement.
