Servant leadership represents a significant departure from hierarchical systems of leadership often employed in educational and social service programs. The premise of servant leadership is deeply rooted in the leader's priority of serving others, to ensure that other people's highest priority needs are being served before one's self. The servant leader seeks to improve the skills of others, helping them to become more autonomous in their work settings. In this article, the author contends that the servant leader model of management advocated by R. K. Greenleaf, S. R. Covey, and others in the world of business has direct application to leaders who are seeking to develop strength-based schools and youth serving organizations.
