An Investigation of Double Bass Vibrato Characteristics

The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe various vibrato characteristics of university double bass students. The primary objectives were: (1) to describe vibrato rate and width for commonly used fingers in first, fourth, and thumb positions; (2) to investigate whether students initiate vibrato in an upward or downward direction; and (3) to compare pitch differences of tones played with and without vibrato. Twenty university double bass students performed tones with and without vibrato in first, fourth, and thumb positions. Analysis of digital audio recordings indicated that participants' mean vibrato rate and width for all fingers was 4.79 Hz and 20 cents. Mean vibrato rates increased within each playing position, and both mean vibrato rates and widths increased with successively higher playing positions. Participants' exhibited no significant initiations of vibrato in upward or downward directions, and mean vibrated pitches were 1 cent different than corresponding mean non-vibrated pitches. Implications for practitioners are discussed.
