In fall 2000, Eastern Illinois University implemented an electronic writing portfolio (EWP) to assess students' writing skills. Students who were freshmen in fall 2000 and transfer students enrolling under the fall 2000 catalogue or subsequent catalogues must submit materials to the EWP. The EWP submissions come from each academic level as follows: first essay, from one of the English core courses before completion of thirty semester hours; second essay, from a writing-intensive general education course at the 2000 level or from an introductory writing-intensive course in the major between completion of thirty and fifty-nine semester hours; third essay, from an upper-division writing-intensive general education course; and fourth essay, from the senior seminar between completion of ninety hours and graduation. In addition, the instructor involved must document that EWP submissions are indeed course work. The author has been told that because of the EWP, departments outside the traditional writing fields such as English and Journalism are now looking intently at the writing required in their courses. In some instances, the number of writing-intensive courses being offered is increasing dramatically.
