Out of 200 newspaper editors randomly selected from a directory, 64 responded to a questionnaire eliciting their opinions on the subject materials most often censored by groups in the United States. The editors' responses were compared to those of 121 freshmen at Cameron University (Oklahoma). A majority of the editors supported the First Amendment, but many gave personal opinions showing they were not happy with some elements that appear in today's communications media. When compared with the conservative college freshmen, the editors had fewer censors among themselves than did the students, with a high percentage of both groups showing unwillingness to ban materials. The top three subjects of concern to both groups were violence, racial prejudice, and pornography. (A copy of the questionnaire is attached.) (Author/RL)
