Talking, Singing, Rhyming: Activities for Families with Children Ages 3 to 5 [Presented by]"Between the Lions[R]" = Hablar, cantar, recitar: Actividades para familias con ninos de 3 a 5 anos [presentado por]"Between the Lions[R]."
WGBH-TV, Boston, MA.
"Between the Lions" is a Public Broadcasting System program promoting literacy for children ages 4 through 7 years combining state-of-the-art puppetry, animation, live action, and music to achieve its mission of helping young children learn to read. This guide, in English- and Spanish-language versions, provides literacy activities for parents and their 3- to 5-year-olds, and focuses on talking with children and using music and rhyming as ways for children to play with words and practice their sounds. The guide begins by listing suggested poetry books for children and literacy tips for parents such as making up new words to familiar songs and poems, and having fun with rhymes and silly word play. Suggestions for talking with children include taking time to listen when children talk, using interesting words that are new to children, and explaining new words encountered in books or on television. A family album activity provides opportunities for telling stories to children about the parents' childhood. A Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme activity includes making deviled eggs and pretending to be an egg rolling on the floor. Suggestions for making rhythm instruments and the lyrics to the "Between the Lions" theme song complete the guide. (KB)
