Campana, Robert J.; Langer, Sidney
This publication is a complete revision of an earlier booklet brought on by the dramatic changes in the energy outlook of the United States that occurred in 1973 and 1974. The purpose of this document is to inform the public on the overall U.S. energy situation, in particular electricity generated from nuclear reactors and other sources. The question and answer format is retained from the earlier version. Topics covered include: (1) Economics and Reliability; (2) Sources of Radiation; (3) Biological Effects of Radiation; (4) Plutonium Toxicity; (5) Thermal Discharges; (6) Safety: Emergency Core Cooling; (7) Benefit and Risk Perspective; and (8) Breeder Reactors. A bibliography is included. The authors are proponents of nuclear power and they have endeavored to present objective information in this publication. (MR)
