The Seacoast as Teacher: A Field Experience. (An Adventure in Learning).
Marron, Tom
Designed to accomodate 2 days and 1 night of intensive investigation of the seacoast environment of Rhode Island's southern coast, this secondary curriculum guide presents a brief program description, program goals, a program schedule, descriptions of each task involved in 6 field investigations, and descriptions of the tasks involved in a food hunt. The extremely varied student activities are described in terms of the 6 field investigations and the camping experience (cooking, backpacking, writing, sketching, etc). Program goals are identified as increasing the students': knowledge and understanding of the life of the seacoast and man's relation to it; willingness and interest in continuing to learn about the seacoast resources; appreciation and concern for the natural resources of the seacoast; ability to investigate a problem, a place, and an unknown; ability and willingness to work together with others; and confidence in their mental and physical abilities. The field investigations are labeled as follows: basic saltwater investigation; rocky coast investigation; Galilee investigation; Fishermen's Memorial Campground Investigation; barrier beach investigation; and salt marsh investigation. Tasks basic to all environmental field investigations are identified as follows: observing the saltwater environment; collecting plants and animals; measuring water characteristics; interpreting water characteristics; making oxygen comparisons; and examining man in this environment.
