Approaches to Teaching Energy. Energy and Ourselves/Energy for the Consumer. Children's Learning in Science Project.
Leeds Univ. (England). Centre for Studies in Science and Mathematics Education.
During the period 1984-1986, over 30 teachers from the Yorkshire (England) region have worked in collaboration with the Children's Learning in Science Project (CLIS) developing and testing teaching schemes in the areas of energy, particle theory, and plant nutrition. The project is based upon the constructivist approach to teaching. This guide focuses on teaching about energy. The program starts with considerations about children's early ideas about human energy, and is called "Energy and Ourselves." These ideas are extended into a consideration of energy in the home and is entitled "Energy for the Consumer." Sequence of the lessons follows this plan: (1) orientation; (2) eliciting students' ideas; (3) restructuring, modifying and extending ideas; (4) application of ideas; and (5) review of change of ideas. Materials developed and field tested by a group of 12 science teachers dealt with such energy concepts as transfer and transformation, conservation, degradation, dissipation, quantification, and transfer efficiency. The guide contains lesson plans, pupil worksheets and sections of explanatory text. (A third program, "Energy for Citizenship," is discussed only in terms of rationale.) (TW)
